FROM THE DEAN

Erika H. James

Dean
Reliance Professor of Management and Private Enterprise

“As AI continues to commoditize the world’s access to information, leaders need to prioritize the human skills AI can’t replicate. Things like sense-making, judgement, consensus-building, and above all, accountability. At Wharton, we believe people have and will continue to be essential to business’ ability to positively impact society. In this moment, we must make sure we don’t lose sight of humanity as AI becomes even more embedded in how we learn, work, and live.”

OUR APPROACH

Faculty insight moves between research, the classroom, and practice

Wharton has always been an innovator and early mover, and our approach to AI is no different. Our world-class faculty teach learners at every stage, from pre-college students to seasoned executives. They see firsthand how people and organizations are using AI to create value—and where the most consequential questions, opportunities, and risks are emerging. Those insights move between research, the classroom, and the world of practice, strengthening learning at every stage. Wharton is where ambitious students, scholars, and leaders come to understand AI’s impact on business and society—and help shape what comes next.

Our 240+ faculty members are studying AI’s impact on everything from monetary policy, to career progression, to medical decision-making—and bringing new insights directly into the classroom. We created the Wharton AI Research Fund to support faculty in further exploring how AI is being applied and its human impact. The AI Education Innovation Fund provides faculty with resources to develop new AI courses, enhance existing curricula, and create innovative learning experiences.

Cait Lamberton

Michael Roberts

Professor of Finance
Vice Dean, MBA Program

“AI has raised the bar for everyone by producing more of the work. The value of a Wharton MBA is the ability to think a problem through, make the call, and answer for it.”

Kevin Werbach

Professor of Legal Studies & Business Ethics
Vice Dean, Executive MBA Program

“Wharton gives our students dedicated time—and the context—to wrestle with where AI can automate work and make life easier, and where they should double down on the value they uniquely provide as human beings.”

Nancy Zhang

Professor of Statistics and Data Science
Vice Dean, Doctoral Programs

Student Experience

At Wharton, AI isn’t treated as an elective—it’s viewed as a core business competency and embedded throughout our students’ learning experience. We were the first leading business school to create a dedicated AI MBA major and undergraduate concentration. Our Artificial Intelligence for Business Curriculum explores the technical skills needed to work with and evaluate AI systems, along with the business, economic, legal, ethical, psychological, and societal impacts of AI. Outside the classroom, our AI & Analytics Accelerator pairs students with industry experts to explore real-world business challenges and develop solutions using the latest techniques in machine learning and AI. Students further explore their interests in AI through nearly a dozen AI and Analytics clubs and our annual Wharton Hack-AI-thon.
