Wharton UPDATE
MONTHLY NEWS AND HIGHLIGHTS May 2012

Thomas RobertsonAs our graduating students prepare to cross the finish line this month, our campus is in a period of high optimism. That is as it should be. The Class of 2012 came to us because they were determined to change their lives — and maybe even one day the world. Now they are moving on, armed with new knowledge to be put into action throughout their careers. While they must leave campus to do this, they certainly do not leave Wharton. Instead, they join our lifelong community: one of the largest and most influential alumni networks of any business school.

Wharton alumni continue to share insights at gatherings such as this weekend's Alumni Reunion and at our celebrated Global Alumni Forums, this year in Milan, May 17-18, and in Jakarta, June 22-23. They remain connected with each other via mentoring networks and affinity clubs, and with their faculty via online educational offerings, including our award-winning Knowledge@Wharton, now with 2 million subscribers across five international editions.

Ben Franklin knew that "An investment in knowledge pays the best interest." With that in mind we are so proud to launch our newest graduates into a gratifying lifetime of learning. We wish them well, and we look forward to welcoming them back to campus and to other Wharton events many times in the years to come.

external hires E-book Price-Fixing: Finding the Best Model for Publishers — and Readers
Apple and five book publishers were sued this spring by the U.S. Department of Justice on the grounds that they colluded to fix prices for e-books sold on Apple's iBookstore website. The legal controversy over Apple's efforts to use the so-called "agency model" when selling books directly to consumers offers a good opportunity to examine the benefits and costs of adopting that approach, both for online retailers and their customers, notes Prof. Z. John Zhang, who has co-authored a recent paper on the topic. Read article.

by Peter Cappelli

Peter Cappelli, George W. Taylor Professor of Management and Director of Wharton's Center for Human Resources, debunks the myth of the skills gap and exposes the real reasons why qualified jobseekers are not being hired. Drawing on jobs data, anecdotes from all sides of the employer-employee divide, and interviews with jobs professionals, he explores the paradoxical forces bearing down on the American workforce and lays out solutions that can help us break through what has become a crippling employer-employee stand-off to rev America's job engine again.
