Wharton MBA Student Anuj Mohan Inspires Memorial Scholarship Fund
Philadelphia, July 26, 2006 -- The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania announced that Anuj Mohan, who had completed the first year of the two-year MBA program, passed away on June 11, 2006 from complications of a near-drowning accident in Mountain View, California. Mohan’s family has established a memorial scholarship fund that will help students to attend the Wharton School, and Mohan’s undergraduate institution, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
While at Wharton, Mohan, 30, was elected co-president of the Entrepreneurship Club, played a leading role in Wharton's annual technology conference, and regularly brought high-level business leaders to the campus. He was selected to the Director's List, the School’s top academic honor.
“Anuj was extraordinary,” said Anjani Jain, vice dean and director of the Wharton Graduate Division. “He excelled, with grace and humility, in all aspects of his Wharton experience — academics, athletics, co-curricular pursuits, and community commitment. He carried his ample talents with a tremendous generosity of spirit and deeply touched the lives of many in our community who came to know him.”
To continue his work and honor his memory, Mohan’s family has established the Anuj Mohan Scholarship Fund to enable exceptional students from families of limited financial means to attend Wharton and MIT, from which Mohan graduated with B.S. and M.Eng degrees in electrical engineering and computer science.
“Our hope is to help educate the world's future entrepreneurs, scientists, mathematicians and CEOs,” said Neal Mohan, brother of Anuj. “This was a cause that was dear to Anuj's heart. He believed passionately that the creative application of technology could continually improve the lives of people around the world. Educating bright young people to become leaders and innovators in their communities, just as Anuj was, seems to be the best way to carry on that legacy.”

For six years prior to attending Wharton, Mohan was an engineer, software architect and mentor to numerous employees at KANA, a Silicon Valley high-tech company. He founded and directed the Software Entrepreneurship Lecture Series of the 8,000 member MIT Alumni Association of Northern California, which connects Bay Area CEOs, VCs, and entrepreneurs in a forum to discuss emerging trends in software development, applied technology, and Internet business models.
Mohan was a published researcher, authoring papers on artificial intelligence and machine learning, which are cited around the world. He also volunteered at the National Kidney Foundation, helping to raise thousands of dollars to create awareness about and prevent chronic kidney disease.
A memorial service for Mohan will be held on the Wharton campus this fall.
