Wharton School to Hold First-Ever Global Alumni Forum in India: January 6-7
Event to Launch School’s 125th Anniversary Celebrations
Mumbai and Philadelphia, Pa., Dec. 19, 2005 -- The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania will hold its first-ever Global Alumni Forum in India on Jan. 6-7, 2006 at the National Centre of Performing Arts in Mumbai. Starting with this forum, the Wharton School will begin a 16-month celebration of its founding – and the origin of collegiate business education in the world http://125th.wharton.upenn.edu/.

The forum will feature an array of participants including University of Pennsylvania President Amy Gutmann, Wharton School Dean Patrick Harker, and Finance Minister of India, P. Chidambaram, who will speak on “The Indian Economy at Inflection Point.” Other topics to be discussed at the forum will include critical issues affecting India — including outsourcing, foreign investments, and Indian pharmaceuticals — as well as more general topics, such as the future of telecom, alternative medicine, and social entrepreneurship. Wharton alumnus Anil D. Ambani, chairman of Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Enterprises, serves as chairman of the forum’s Organizing Committee.

Wharton School Establishes Shanghai Representative Office
New Staff, New Programs Strengthen Relationship with China
SHANGHAI and PHILADELPHIA, PA, Dec. 1, 2005 — The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania today announced the immediate establishment of a Shanghai Representative Office to support faculty research on China, the further development of the Chinese language edition of Knowledge@Wharton, new executive education initiatives in China, and other China-related programs. The announcement was made today at a Wharton Alumni Meeting in Shanghai attended by over 250 graduates of the school’s various programs.

Wharton School Adds Undergraduate Secondary Concentration in Retailing
Nov. 17, 2005 — The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania has announced the addition of a secondary concentration in retailing, which will provide students with a deeper foundation for successful careers in retail. The new curriculum will be offered to Wharton undergraduate students and will be administered by the School’s Jay H. Baker Retailing Initiative, which was established in 2003 through a $10-million gift from Patty and Jay H. Baker.

The awards recognize visionaries and organizations that use technology in an innovative and creative manner to revolutionize their industries.

Wharton School Announces Establishment of Murrel J. Ades Endowed Professorship
Nov. 7, 2005 — The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania announced that it has received a gift to create the Murrel J. Ades Endowed Professorship in honor of Ades, a late Wharton School graduate who would have turned 100 this year. The professorship is endowed by his son, Robert Ades, who is a senior partner at the law firm of Robert A. Ades and Associates, in Washington, D.C. The fund will allow the School to honor an exceptional scholar and teacher, providing the School and its faculty with additional research funding, and also will further strengthen the ties that the Ades family already have with the University.

Wharton and NYU Stern Launch Joint Initiative on Benefits of Undergraduate Business Education
Nov. 3, 2005 — The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and New York University Stern School of Business announced a joint initiative, “Discover Business Now,” aimed to educate high school sophomores and juniors about what it means to study business at the undergraduate level and how doing so broadens their career opportunities.

Professor Eric Bradlow named the K.P. Chao Professor
October 31, 2005 — The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania announced the appointment of Professor Eric Bradlow as the K.P. Chao Professor. Bradlow is the first professor to fill the endowed chair, funded by K.P. Chao, chairman of the board of Novel Enterprises Limited, based in Hong Kong.

Wharton Joins Los Angeles Branch of Federal Reserve Bank and National Press Foundation to Host Business Journalism Seminar

Professor Kunreuther Named Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science
October 27 — Six faculty members of the University of Pennsylvania have been named Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. They are professors from Penn's School of Arts and Sciences, School of Engineering and Applied Science, School of Medicine and Wharton School.

Wharton School Receives $2.5 Million from Leon Lowenstein Foundation
Gift to Establish John M. Bendheim Loan Forgiveness Fund for Public Service
Sept. 26, 2005 — The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania announced the creation of the John M. Bendheim Loan Forgiveness Fund for Public Service, which is designed to encourage Wharton MBA graduates to pursue careers in the public and not-for-profit sectors. Awards from the fund will be used to help cover the cost of the MBA graduates’ educational debt obligations. A $2.5-million grant from the Leon Lowenstein Foundation established the Bendheim Fund. John M. Bendheim, who earned his undergraduate degree from Wharton in 1940, and his son, Thomas L. Bendheim, who earned his MBA from Wharton and an MA from Penn’s Graduate School of Arts & Sciences as part of a joint degree program at the Lauder Institute in 1990, are directors of the Leon Lowenstein Foundation.

Wharton School Announces New Senior Board Leadership

July 18, 2005 — The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania announced that it has received $1 million from current and former members of the Wharton Executive Board for Europe, Africa and the Middle East to fund the Wharton European Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Initiative. The check was presented to Wharton School Dean Patrick Harker during the School’s June 10 Global Alumni Forum in London. The CSR Initiative is designed to support research on corporate ethics and responsible investment with a focus on business in the U.S. and Europe.

Wharton and Infosys Award Entrepreneurs in Latin America

Santiago, Chile, July 1, 2005 — The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and Infosys Technologies Ltd. announced the winners of the Wharton Infosys Business Transformation Awards (WIBTA) 2005 for Latin America at the Wharton School’s Global Alumni Forum in Santiago, Chile. The WIBTA “Enterprise Business Transformation Award” was presented to Chilean company Tecmédica for focusing on improving conditions for patients, health staff and administrators through an efficient use of IT. Wharton School Class Gift Sets New Record
Over $1 Million Raised by 98.5 Percent of Class
June 29, 2005 — The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania announced that the Class of 2005 raised a combined $1,288,267 for their class gift and registered a participation rate of 98.5%. This year’s campaign also experienced the highest number of donors in Wharton Class Gift history, with 962 individuals contributing.

Anne Sullivan Named Senior Associate Dean for Finance and Administration at the Wharton School
June 13, 2005 — The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania announced the appointment of Anne Rollow Sullivan as the School’s new senior associate dean for finance and administration. She succeeds Scott Douglass, who stepped down earlier this year to become vice president for finance and treasurer of the University of Pennsylvania.

Randall J. Weisenburger of Omnicom Gives Wharton School Communication Program $1.1 Million
May 2, 2005 — The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania announced today a gift from Randall J. Weisenburger, Omnicom Group’s executive vice president and chief financial officer, of $750,000 to the Wharton Communication Program. This follows an initial gift of $350,000 in 2001, resulting in one of the largest cumulative gifts — $1.1 million — ever made to a business school’s communication program.

Alumnus Thomas Caleel Named Director of Wharton School MBA Admissions and Financial Aid
March 21, 2005 — Following an extensive search, alumnus Thomas Caleel was appointed director of MBA Admissions and Financial Aid at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Caleel previously worked at Cagan McAfee Capital Partners, a private equity firm in California’s Silicon Valley, where he performed financial analysis for portfolio companies and raised public and private funds across the energy, recycling, and life sciences sectors.

NFL Players To Attend Wharton Executive Education Program

Jan. 13, 2005 — The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania announced the creation of a new Leadership Advisory Board, spearheaded by alumnus Todd Thomson, chairman and CEO of the global wealth management division of Citigroup, which comprises the Citigroup Private Bank, Smith Barney and Global Equity Research businesses. The board was convened to provide an essential link between the Wharton community and the foremost leaders in business, public service, government, entertainment, and sports. The first meeting of the advisory board was held Nov. 9th and 10th in Philadelphia, Pa.
