To Speak at Wharton’s 2004 MBA Commencements
Top Business Leaders Featured at Wharton’s East and West Coast Ceremonies
April 14, 2004 – The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania has announced that Klaus Zumwinkel, a graduate of Wharton’s MBA program, will be the featured speaker at the School’s MBA commencement in Philadelphia. Zumwinkel is chair of the board of management at Deutsche Post AG. The May 16 ceremony will occur at 1:00 p.m. at Franklin Field, located at South and 33rd Streets on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania with a reception afterward at Jon M. Huntsman Hall.
On May 2, Wharton will hold its second West Coast MBA commencement ceremony. The graduating students in the MBA for Executives program began their studies in 2002, one year after Wharton opened its West Coast facility in San Francisco. The featured speaker will be alumna Ann McLaughlin Korologos, a former U.S. Secretary of Labor. She currently serves as vice chairman of the RAND Board of Trustees. The Wharton West Coast commencement will occur at 10:00 a.m. at the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center’s Herbst Theater with a reception following at San Francisco’s City Hall.
About Zumwinkel
Deutsche Post, owned by the German government, is Europe's largest postal service provider and provides traditional and same-day letter and parcel delivery, online bulk mail management services, mail process outsourcing, and logistics consulting. The company also owns 23 percent of the shipping company DHL and a majority stake in state-controlled Deutsche Postbank. Prior to serving as chairman of the board at Deutsche Post AG, Zumwinkel was chairman of the management board of Quelle Group, which he joined in 1985. During the previous 11 years, Zumwinkel held a variety of positions at McKinsey & Co. Inc., including serving as a partner in German management and as director in worldwide management.
A member of Wharton’s Executive Board for Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, Zumwinkel earned his MBA from Wharton in 1971. He received a graduate degree in business economics and a doctorate in political science at the University of Muenster in 1973.
About Korologos
In addition to her work at RAND, Korologos also serves as senior advisor to Benedetto, Gartland & Company, Inc., an investment banking firm in N.Y., and is a member of a commission of the International Labour Organization. Korologos currently sits on the board of directors of several corporations including AMR Corporation, Fannie Mae, Harman International Industries, Inc., Kellogg Company, Microsoft Corporation, and Host Marriott Corporation. Additionally, Korologos serves as a member of the governing boards of a number of nonprofit organizations. She also is a member of the board of overseers of the Wharton School and serves on the board of directors of the Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars.
From 1987 to 1989, Korologos served as the U.S. Secretary of Labor. She also formerly served as under secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior. Previously, she served as chair of the Aspen Institute, president of the Federal City Council in Washington, D.C., and visiting fellow at the Urban Institute. She earned a B.A. degree from Marymount College and studied at the Wharton School.
