Wharton Awards Dean's Medals for Outstanding Leadership
Alumni Leaders Geoffrey Boisi and Michael Tarnopol, and Former Wharton Dean Thomas Gerrity Honored
December 2003 — The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania has awarded its Dean's Medal to alumni leaders Geoffrey Boisi and Michael Tarnopol, and former Dean Thomas P. Gerrity. The medals were presented at this fall's Campaign for Sustained Leadership Finale for their extraordinary efforts during the School's first capital campaign, which raised nearly $450 million, the largest campaign in business school history.
Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania Completes Largest Fund-Raising Campaign in Business School History
More than $445 million raised from more than 23,000 donors
October 2003 — The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania has announced the successful completion of the Campaign for Sustained Leadership, a $425 million fund-raising initiative, launched in June 1996, and completed in June 2003. A total of $445,774,603 was raised, completing the largest campaign in business school history. The original campaign goal of $350 million was raised to $425 million following a successful "quiet phase."

Wharton West Program Offers World-Class Business Education
August 2003 — The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania announced the upcoming graduation of its first West Coast class of MBA for Executives students. Graduation of the 59 students will be held Aug. 24, 2003 at 12:30 p.m. in the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center's Herbst Theater. The graduating students began their MBA studies in August, 2001, when the Wharton School opened its West Coast facility — Wharton West — in San Francisco. They commuted to the residential program from all over the country, bringing an average of 10 years experience in industries ranging from finance and manufacturing to telecommunications and entertainment
Wharton School Online Business Journal, Knowledge@Wharton, Announces Partnership with Economist.com
June 2003 — The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania announced that Knowledge@Wharton, the online business analysis and research journal of the Wharton School, and Economist.com have entered a partnership to launch a series of Web-based briefings on current business topics. The seminars will be accessible from Economist.com and Knowledge@Wharton websites, reaching a combined audience of nearly 1.8-million senior executives around the world. These online events will reside in a new section of both websites to be called The Global Business Report.
Wharton Infosys Business Transformation Awards Honor Innovative Users of Technology

May 2003 — The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and Infosys announced the winners of the second Wharton Infosys Business Transformation Awards (WIBTA). These awards recognize visionaries and Global 2000 organizations that use technology creatively to revolutionize their industries. The categories for the awards this year were Organization-Wide Transformation and Technology Change Leader.
Wharton Business Plan Competition Winner: More Than A Pet Project
Student team PAWS wins grand prize with pet insurance focus
April 2003 — PAWS Pet Insurance, whose business plan is aimed at providing accident and illness pet health insurance to pet owners in the U.S., won the Wharton Business Plan Competition Grand Prize, worth $20,000. The prize was awarded at the annual Wharton Venture Fair Monday, April 28, 2003 where, in all, students received over $45,000 in cash prizes and access to capital.

April 2003 — The Wharton School has announced that Connie Duckworth, a 1979 graduate of Wharton's MBA program, will be the featured speaker at the School's MBA Commencement. Duckworth is a founding partner of 8 Wings Enterprises, through which she and three other partners serve as business advisors to — and selectively invest in — early-stage, women-led companies.
Wharton School MBA Class Gift Sets New Record Despite Difficult Economy
Nearly $500,000 Raised by 98 Percent of Class
April 2003 — The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania announced that the MBA Class of 2003 raised $470,539 for their class gift, the highest amount ever raised by a graduating class. Despite the difficult economy and tough job market, 98 percent of the class of 757 students participated in raising money for their unrestricted class gift.

The Wharton School Announces Appointment of Barbara Kahn As Next Vice Dean of the Undergraduate Division
February 2003 — The dean of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Patrick Harker, has announced the appointment of Barbara Kahn as the next vice dean of the Wharton School's Undergraduate Division. Kahn will succeed Vice Dean Thomas Dunfee when his term ends June 30, 2003.

Interest in "Education Track" grows among University of Pennsylvania students
February 2003 — Early results from the Wharton Business Plan Competition show that, despite a weakened economy, participation levels are holding steady with an upsurge of business concepts geared toward education and services and a scarcity of Internet ideas. For the second year, the Competition is offering a special "industry track" in partnership with the Graduate School of Education, as part of its goal to encourage participation by all entrepreneurial-minded students at the University of Pennsylvania.

New Site Will Reach Spanish and Portuguese Speaking Readers
January 2003 — Knowledge@Wharton, the online research and business analysis journal of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, has launched a new Web site in collaboration with Universia.net called Universia Knowledge@Wharton. The new site, which is published in both Spanish and Portuguese, enables Knowledge@Wharton to reach Spanish and Portuguese speaking readers around the world. Universia.net is the largest university web portal with 635 member universities in Spain, Portugal and Latin America.
The Wharton School Announces Establishment of the Russell Ackoff Endowment Fund
Endowment To Promote Research and Practice in Risk Management and Systems Science
January 2003 — The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania announced today the creation of the Russell L. Ackoff Endowment funded through support initially provided by the charitable trust of Anheuser-Busch. With a $1.2 million endowment, the fund will promote research and practice in risk management and systems science. In addition to the creation of the fund, Wharton Professor Paul Kleindorfer has been named the Anheuser-Busch Professor of Management Science.
Wharton Announces New Associate Dean for Communications and Business Development
January 2003 — Wharton Dean Patrick Harker has announced the appointment of Kathleen McClave to the newly created post of associate dean for Communications and Business Development. The position was created to expand on the Wharton School's already successful efforts in global brand-building, corporate relations and the creation of new commercial revenue streams. McClave will help to coordinate efforts across administrative and academic departments — including research centers, Executive Education, Career Management and External Affairs — to maximize the School's potential in these critical areas.
Boettner Center for Pensions and Retirement Research Established at Wharton School
Research Areas Include Global Aging, Successful Retirement, and Public and Private Pensions
January 2003 — The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania has announced the establishment of the Boettner Center for Pensions and Retirement Research. The Boettner Center will support scholarly research, teaching, and outreach on global aging, successful retirement, and public and private pensions. The center also will disseminate research findings to international audiences of academics and policy-makers as well as support data development efforts at the University of Pennsylvania. Olivia S. Mitchell, International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans Professor, has been appointed center director.
