Wharton Executive Education Presents Program on the New Business Reality: Scenarios and Strategies for the Future
November 2001 — The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania will present a special executive education program Dec. 3-6, 2001 entitled "Wharton on the New Business Reality: Scenarios and Strategies for the Future." The program evolved from a faculty workshop following Sept. 11 that drew together nearly 20 Wharton faculty from across the school to address the business implications of this event in the context of an already weakened economy.
Wharton Establishes Learning Lab with $10-Million Gift from Alumnus Alfred West, Jr.
September 2001 — The Wharton School has announced the creation of the Alfred West Jr. Learning Lab with a $10-million gift from Alfred P. West, Jr., chairman and CEO of SEI Investments. The Alfred West Jr. Learning Lab will create a series of innovative learning tools that challenge students to think strategically across business functions and organizations.
Division of External Affairs Announces Restructuring of Alumni Affairs and Wharton Fund
August 2001 — The Wharton School's Associate Dean for External Affairs, Steven Oliveira, has announced the restructuring of two departments within the School's Division of External Affairs. As of August 20, Alumni Affairs and the Wharton Fund have been merged to form one new department — Alumni Affairs and Annual Giving. Oliveira appointed Leslie Arbuthnot, former director of the Wharton Fund, to head the new department. Before joining Wharton, Arbuthnot served in a number of leadership positions in alumni relations and annual giving at Tulane University.
Wharton Announces Start of First West Coast Executive MBA Class
August 2001 — The Wharton School has announced the start of its first West Coast class of executive MBA (WEMBA) students. Classes will begin Aug. 26 at the School's new location in San Francisco called "Wharton West" with 65 students.
Wharton Appoints Steven Oliveira as New Associate Dean for External Affairs
July 2001 — The Wharton School has announced the appointment of Steven Oliveira as associate dean for External Affairs. Oliveira will lead and manage development, communications and alumni affairs programming, including comprehensive activities for Wharton's $425-million Campaign for Sustained Leadership.
Wharton-Omnicom Communication Fellows Program Established at the Wharton School
June 2001 — The Wharton School has announced the creation of the Wharton-Omnicom Communication Fellows Program. The initiative will support the training of 40 MBA and other Penn graduate students to serve as written and verbal communications coaches for Management Communication, a core course taken by all Wharton MBA students during their first year of study. A second component of the gift will be used to support the development of a technology-enhanced distance-writing program that will be implemented by Wharton-Omnicom Communication Fellows.
Wharton Establishes Mack Center for Technological Innovation with $10-Million Gift from Alumnus William L. Mack
June 2001 — The Wharton School has announced the creation of the William and Phyllis Mack Center for Technological Innovation. As the umbrella organization for all of Wharton's technology management initiatives, the Center will support the research and publishing activities of Wharton faculty members, create an endowed professorship and support a student-run conference.

June 2001 — In a period of less than four years, a research data service developed and marketed by the Wharton School has become the standard for large-scale academic data research, providing instant Web access to financial and business datasets for most top-tier business schools, including 21 of the top 25 schools as ranked by Business Week.
The Wharton School Announces the Site of Wharton West
Historic Folger Building Located Near Heart of San Francisco Financial District Will Host Wharton Executive MBA and Other Programs
May 2001 — Wharton has announced that it has selected the historic Folger Building in San Francisco as its Wharton West location. The site will serve as the base for the School's Executive MBA program (WEMBA), and award-winning, non-degree executive education programs. The site will also provide office space for faculty members on the West Coast who are conducting research projects, and for classroom space to conduct MBA courses for Philadelphia-based students.
Biotech and Software Ventures Win Wharton Business Plan Competition
May 2001 — ProtoCell, a biotechnology company that is developing a drug discovery tool to determine the function of thousands of proteins, was the grand prize winner of the third annual Wharton Business Plan Competition. The winners were announced on April 30 at Philadelphia's Ballroom at the Ben Franklin during the competition's Venture Fair, which marks the culmination of the nine-month long competition.
Narayana N.R. Murthy, Global IT Leader and Entrepreneur, To Speak at 2001 MBA Commencement
April 2001 — The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania has announced that Narayana N.R. Murthy, co-founder, chairman and CEO of Infosys Technologies Limited (NASDAQ - INFY), a leading global information technology and software company, will be the featured speaker at the School's MBA commencement on May 20 in Philadelphia.
Wharton and INSEAD — Two of World's Leading Business Schools Forge Alliance
March 2001 — INSEAD and the Wharton School have announced the formation of a unique Alliance in the global development and delivery of management education. The Alliance combines the resources of the world's leaders in management education to deliver top quality business education to postgraduate candidates and executives across four dedicated campuses: Wharton's U.S. campuses in Philadelphia and San Francisco, and those of INSEAD in Fontainebleau France, and Singapore.

January 2001 — The Wharton School and SpencerStuart, the international executive search firm, have jointly selected the board of directors at Colgate-Palmolive (NYSE: CL) to receive the fifth annual "Board Excellence" Award. Colgate-Palmolive, based in New York City, is one of the world's largest global consumer products companies. Wharton also announced that the board of Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE), a research-based, global pharmaceutical company headquartered in New York City will receive an "Honorable Mention" Award.
