125th Anniversary of First Day of Wharton Classes Marked with Leadership Roundtable
Wharton's first day of classes 125 years ago will be commemorated on Sept. 15 with a Business Roundtable on Leadership. The theme will be leadership through innovation, featuring leaders such as Connie Duckworth, WG'79, president and chairman of the board of Azru, Inc.; Alex Gorsky, WG'96, head of Pharma North America and CEO of Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp.; C. Robert Henrikson, C'69, WAM'90, chairman, president and CEO of MetLife, Inc.; Jeffrey Katz, WG'71, CEO of Sherwood Equities; and Seth Waugh, chairman and CEO, Deutsche Bank North America. The Wharton community is invited to attend the event, which will be moderated by Professor Michael Useem and will also feature Professors Patricia Danzon and Peter Linneman. It will begin in the Zellerbach Theater at 11:00 a.m. with Dean Harker's address, "The Leadership Mandate: Business Schools in Global Society." The panel discussion will run from 12:00-1:30 p.m., followed by a reception in Jon M. Huntsman Hall. read more about the Leadership Roundtable
Alumni Gather in Rio de Janeiro
Wharton hosted a Global Alumni Forum in Rio de Janeiro last month as part of the School's celebration of its 125th anniversary. Each year, the School holds forums in centers of economic importance and business growth around the world, giving alumni the chance to learn about business opportunities and meet regional business and government leaders. Speakers at the Rio event included: Henrique Meirelles, governor of the Central Bank of Brazil; Alain Belda, chairman and CEO of Alcoa; Roberto Civita, W'57, chairman and CEO of Abril Editora; Pedro Moreira Salles, vice chairman and CEO of Unibanco; and Ernesto Silva, COO of Coca-Cola FEMSA. Michelle Antonio Named Director of MBA Career Management
Following an extensive search, Michelle Antonio, W'91, was appointed director of Wharton's MBA Career Management Office, effective Aug. 30. Antonio, who has been senior associate director of MBA Career Management at Wharton since May 2003, has over 12 years of industry and recruiting experience.

MBA for Executives Students to Travel to Shanghai and Bangkok
More than 70 second-year MBA for Executives students from Wharton West in San Francisco will travel to Shanghai on September 11-15 to meet with key business leaders to learn more about China’s growing influence in the international marketplace. The international trip, part of the Wharton curriculum, provides both students and international industry and government leaders the opportunity to learn from one another about forward-looking business trends in China. The international trip for East Coast MBA for Executives students will be to Bangkok, Thailand. read news release
First Global Immersion Program in Africa a Success
Last spring, the GIP organized its first-ever trip to Africa, taking 28 MBA students on a three-week tour of South Africa, Ghana, and Senegal to learn about, and make contacts in, this developing region of the global economy. Wharton Business Plan Competition Winners Rang NASDAQ Closing Bell
Wharton Business Plan Competition grand prize-winning team SmartMotion Technologies (MuscleMorph) rang the closing bell at the NASDAQ Stock Market last month. Since winning the competition, the team has filed two provisional patents for its technology, which provides a novel, cost-effective solution for building artificial muscles. read news release
New Program for Organizational Learning Leaders Offered by Wharton and Graduate School of Education
The first class of the Executive Program in Work-Based Learning Leadership will begin in January 2007. The program, offered through a partnership between Wharton and the Graduate School of Education, is the first top-tier university program of its kind, providing a formalized education in business, leadership, technology, and strategy in the context of work-related learning. read news release

Entrepreneur in Residence Program Announces New Slate of Company Founders
The Wharton Entrepreneur in Residence program has started its fifth year, offering all Penn students a rare chance to meet one-on-one with the founders of highly successful businesses. This year, the program will bring to campus entrepreneurs such as Vernon Hill, W'67, founder of Commerce Bank; David Marshall, W'61, founder of Amerimar Realty; and Jay Snider, W'79, founder of SpectaGuard. Entrepreneurial Intern Fellowship Makes Inaugural Selections
Wharton Entrepreneurial Programs (WEP) selected the inaugural group of Wharton Entrepreneurial Intern Fellows. The Wharton Entrepreneurial Intern Fellowship is designed to provide encouragement and $1500 cash awards to select students committed to entrepreneurship who plan to spend the summer in an entrepreneurial setting. The Intern Fellows for the summer of 2006 were: Gregory Friedman, WG'07, who interned at Zillow.com; Ashish Chordia, WG'07, who interned at Kalinex; and Nathaniel Turner, W'08, who interned at VideoEgg.

Undergraduate Ashley Gunn Wins Do Something BRICK Award
Undergraduate Ashley Gunn, W'10, was named a winner of the 2006 Do Something BRICK Awards, a national youth leadership organization with a mission to inspire young people to improve their communities. She was recognized for starting a group -- which now has over 200 student volunteers -- that buys foreclosed houses, repairs and remodels them, and works with urban families to purchase the homes below market value. read more
