Guidelines for studentsAs a Wharton student, you influence the Wharton brand through your communications with fellow students and the outside world. These guidelines provide the tools and resources you need to understand how you may use the Wharton name and marks, for yourself and for student organizations. frequently asked questions
What are the most important things I can do?
When can I use the Wharton name / branding marks?Student clubs may use the Wharton logo on selected event publications and websites, after review and authorization from the appropriate academic program office(s). Students may refer to their affiliation or status with the University/School in connection with personal activities, including consulting, provided that the affiliation or status is accurately represented and any title or position is accurately identified, and provided that such use does not imply University or School endorsement of the activity. See Wharton-marked stationery and correspondence for examples. The University's or School's name must not be used in any announcement, advertising matter, publication, correspondence, or report, in connection with personal or non-University or non-School activities. In some cases, a disclaimer of University or School endorsement may be required. See Student Organization Websites/Materials and Student Conferences and Activities.
Can I get a Wharton Academic Card?Wharton students enrolled in degree-granting undergraduate, MBA, and doctoral programs may purchase "academic cards" from Reprographics. These cards clearly identify students as "candidates" in their respective degree-granting programs at Wharton and are not intended as vehicles for citing specific concentrations or positions within student organizations. Doctoral students who are accepted into specific departmental programs do cite their departmental affiliation.
Any other academic program cards are to be obtained through the services offered by the Penn school offering the program. Wharton cards may not carry two school logos. Academic Card Information and Style StandardsInformation on academic cards is strictly limited to the candidate's degree program status and personal address and contact information. Either current or permanent addresses may be included. Professional certifications are allowed for graduate students, and these standards are maintained by the Graduate Division. Authorized PrinterWharton Reprographics is the only authorized printer of Wharton academic cards. No unauthorized stationery (this includes academic cards, letterhead, and envelopes) may be printed using the Wharton School name and/or logo. Personal business cards printed elsewhere cannot duplicate the Wharton School name or logo and are in potential violation of copyright. Ordering Academic CardsStudents place individual orders with Reprographics on its website. All orders are processed on Bursar billing to allow confirmation of a student's status in a degree-granting program.
Can I use Wharton-marked stationery / correspondence?Wharton Official StationeryStudents and student organizations may not use Wharton Official Stationery for their initiatives – it is only for official School use by a Wharton office/division. E-mail and CorrespondenceWhen corresponding with external constituencies as a Wharton student, information provided on the student academic cards must be used. For example: Jane R. Wharton
Student Organization StationeryStudent organization stationery cannot use the Wharton logo marks. No unauthorized stationery may be printed using the Wharton School name or logo in any of its forms.
What logo / nomenclature uses are permitted for student organizations?Student organizations cannot use the Wharton logo, or parts thereof, in their own logos. In addition, only some events/initiatives are granted the use of the Wharton logo. (See Policies for logo/nomenclature use for student events/initiatives.) The WGA Clubs are granted the use of the Wharton name for their club name only. Separate permission is required for using the Wharton name and logo for activities and products of the club. Student organizations should not be named in such a manner as to cause confusion with an official entity or activity of the School. Any Wharton student club must have the term "club" in its name (e.g., Wharton Private Equity Club). The School retains the right to control use of the Wharton name in any activity that affiliates itself with the Wharton School. Please make sure your club logo/nomenclature is approved by the relevant program office .
What disclaimers are required on student organization websites / materials? The Wharton logo cannot be used in student-run organization websites/materials without approval, which may be given for specific activities/events. (See Policies for logo/nomenclature use for student events/initiatives.) If a club or activity includes Wharton as part of its name, regardless of whether the Wharton logo is used or not, the text "student-run" must be included in the introductory paragraph. In addition, the following disclaimer text must be included on a website's home page and on all communications for purposes of authentication: This website/event is produced and administered by the [Name of Club], an independent student-run organization of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. All contents are the responsibility of the club. or The [Name of Club] is an independent student-run organization of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. All content is the responsibility of the club.
How do I handle sponsorship from outside entities?Student organizations that receive sponsorship for their events can add sponsor logos to their materials. The use of sponsor logos on materials should in no way suggest endorsement by the Wharton School. In addition, use of any sponsor/company logo on student organization materials should be accompanied by permission from the relevant entities. Note: The Wharton logo does not share space with other logos, except when it is a sponsor. (See PDF for design guidelines)
What are the policies when using the Wharton logo/nomenclature for student events / initiatives? The Wharton Name and Logo use is controlled by the School. Note: The Wharton School reserves the right to restrict URLs that use the Wharton School name to identify and promote activities. The WGA Clubs are granted the use of the Wharton name for their club name only. Separate permission is required for using name and logo for activities and products of the club. See student organizations usage. The Wharton logo can only be used for student events/activities where the School is providing special review and participation in the event. This initiative/event must fit within the mission of the Wharton School and only the academic program can authorize this usage. The relevant program office is responsible for approving and reviewing all materials. If a club or activity includes Wharton as part of the name, you must follow the usage outlined here: 1) Design Guidelines for use of the Wharton Logo.
2) Identify the Initiative as “Student-Run.”
3) Talk About Wharton.
4) Contact Information.
5) Merchandise. When approval is given for use of the Wharton logo in connection with a student event, that approval does not include use of the logo on merchandising associated with the event. Only an official division of the School can authorize use of the Wharton logo on merchandise – in this case, the relevant Program Office.
What are the policies for non-profit student organization sales?See Merchandise.

Be sure to select the proper student affiliation (Undergraduate, MBA, or Doctoral). This ensures that your request will be e-mailed to the relevant Program Office for review and/or approval. Please note: Permission is granted for only one use.
