Photography & video
Images, more quickly than words, demonstrate the energy and vitality of our community. In this section you will understand how you can tell the Wharton story through images.
Requesting a Photograph: Please review the Photo Gallery. To retain the power of these images it is everyone's responsibility to ensure that they are used appropriately and only to represent the School.

Telling the Wharton Story in Images
Images should reinforce the stature of the School as a global leader in business knowledge and education. Select and use strong images in your communications. If you do not have good images, we recommend that you use a graphical treatment, or in the case of video, use a combination of graphics and audio.
Guidelines for taking and selecting photography
- Wharton images should represent the diversity of the School's global community. See the Photo Gallery for examples.
- Images should show the energy and vitality of the community. For example, it is better to show a professor actively giving a talk, than sitting quietly at the podium.
- Focus your efforts on taking images that demonstrate the unique features of your initiative/program.
- Campus images should show an engaged community and a vibrant environment.
- Keep in mind the School's three foundational values and select images that represent examples of these values.

Technical Recommendations
Photography
- Take images at high resolution so that they can be used in both print and web publications of the School.
- Print images need greater resolution (300 DPI). Typical file sizes are:
- 5" x 7": 8MB - 12MB
- 8" x 12": 24MB - 36MB
- Ask for images of the entire shoot on CD / DVD, not just the image you need for the one specific use; this will enable a wider range of use across the school. Request a web gallery along with the final images. The web gallery can then be used for proofing or posted online for access by other users
.
- Ask for both vertical and horizontal formats so that you have a good selection. (Online use often requires a horizontal format, while print typically requires a vertical format.)
Video / Audio
- Make sure that the final video and audio quality is good.
- Video and audio for the web should be edited carefully, keeping in mind final download size and viewing time (typically 1 - 5 minutes segments).
- Ask for the entire shoot and transcript/log files so that it is available for later needs.
- See Templates: Video section for more details on video standards.

Usage Rights and Contracts
At Wharton, faculty, students and alumni are our key assets, and our goal is to manage our relationships with them. In addition, we often photograph/videotape business and public-policy leaders, whose schedules are tight. In order to minimize the photography requests, and manage our relationships, we need to optimize our photography outreach.
Usage Agreement
Clarify with the photographer/videographer that Wharton requires unlimited use of images and video for marketing in web and print across the School. Make sure that the correct usage agreement is stipulated in the invoice before it is paid. Here is some recommended usage language:
Unlimited usage is granted to the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania for photographs described in this document to be used in the School's
marketing materials with no limits upon publication in multiple versions.
Release Form
Photography and video subjects need to sign a Model Release Form, which gives the School permission to use the images in marketing materials across the School.
Download the Model Release Form in Microsoft Word format.
