Initiatives
The Bobby and Lauren Turner Curriculum Development Fund for Social Impact
As an endowed fund, a portion of the investment income from the Turner Fund is used to support the Program for Social Impact, and the remainder is reinvested to preserve the value of the fund over time.
The Diane S. Levy and Robert M. Levy Social Impact Fund
The endowed fund began in July 2006 with the generosity of Robert M. Levy and Diane S. Levy through a gift to support social impact initiatives. These include student, faculty, and institutional initiatives in such areas as social impact management and business ethics, including summer internships for students who want to work in either the public or nonprofit sectors. The aim is to help educate socially responsible leaders in business and the non-profit sphere, and to do so in ways that make a meaningful difference to Wharton students. This Fund is currently administered by the Wharton Ethics Program.
In 2008-2009, the Fund sponsored the following activities:
- Penn Program
- Curricular development
- Social Impact Seminar Series
- Student sponsorship at the Net Impact Conference
The Lauren and Bobby Turner Social Impact Executive Speaker Series

It focuses on strengthening the Philadelphia community and achieving a ‘social return,’ with the goal of helping support economically sustainable enterprises in Philadelphia area that bolster the social fabric of the region. WCCP is capitalized with equity from the Tri-state area business community and private equity and is governed by a Board of Directors appointed by the shareholders, a management team hired by the Board and an Investment Committee.
Wharton Social Impact Consulting Practicum
With the reduction in value of endowments (and personal portfolios) combined with the reduction in giving, organizations which rely on philanthropic contributions are finding it difficult to fund their programs. Several not-for-profit organizations (including The Enterprise Center and The Penn Museum) have come to Wharton to request help in building a “self- sustaining business model.” We believe there is a meaningful opportunity to help NGOs globally to become economically self-sufficient. This practicum would involve both students and faculty and would be cross functional, depending upon the needs of the “client.”
