The Department of Energy (DOE) has challenged students at The University of Pennsylvania to tackle an important and complex question: Does a feasible business model exist for Public Electric Vehicle Charging? Public Charging refers to charging equipment that anyone can access, for free or for a fee. With the Administration’s plan to put 1 million Electric Vehicles on the road by 2015, the DOE plays an important role in enabling Public Charging development and the results of this challenge will bolster DOE efforts to evaluate the viability of Public Electric Vehicle Charging. The Wharton Energy Club will be taking the lead in assembling 4-5 teams to identify new business models that address the issues associated with developing infrastructure for Public Electric Vehicle Charging. Once teams are assembled, students will have access to Wharton/Engineering Faculty as well as DOE resources and contacts to develop their proposed models. These proposals will be reviewed by Wharton/Engineering Faculty and take on the form of a business case competition. The strongest case(s) will have an opportunity to present to DOE officials in Washington, DC. While winning cases will be selected for presentation, all proposals will be reviewed by Secretary of Energy, Stephen Chu and senior DOE officials.
