WHARTON COMPUTING AND POLICIES

The computing systems, software, and networks of the Wharton School provide a wide range of services to Wharton faculty, students, and staff. The use of these facilities involves certain risks and obligates users to certain responsibilities. For more detailed information, see the Wharton Computing System Accounts and Policies document available from SPIKE’s Computing Tab.

The Wharton School’s computer systems and networks are the private property of the Wharton School and the University of Pennsylvania. Access to these systems is a privilege granted by the Wharton School and the University of Pennsylvania, and may be revoked without prior notice. Any violation of Wharton policy or the University of Pennsylvania’s Policy on Ethical Behavior with Respect to the Electronic Information Environment will result in the revocation of this privilege and may be referred to the University’s Office of Student Conduct.

Commerical Use
Student computing systems, software, and services of the Wharton School are for instructional and research applications in conjunction with Wharton coursework. Commercial use of these systems, software, and services is forbidden.

Wharton System Accounts
Access to Wharton’s lab and group workstations, Intranet, and central server systems requires a Wharton Account. Accounts for incoming students are provided for matriculated students in late Spring. In order to create a Wharton Account, students must first set up a separate University PennKey ID account. This PennKey is also required to access certain University systems. Matriculating students will receive information directly from the University about registering for their PennKey ID.

Account Security
Account owners are responsible for all the activity on their account. No one other than the account owner should be allowed access to an account. Account holders are required to keep their passwords and account information secret and take reasonable precautions against unauthorized access.

Students are required to respect the privacy and integrity of other users, systems, and data. Users are explicitly forbidden to:

• Access, read, or copy other people’s files unless they have been given explicit permission from the owner to do so.
• Transmit messages, electronic mail, or other information anonymously or identified as being from another user
• Use their access to restricted information (such as online directories) for purposes not directly related to their Wharton education
.
Information on networked systems should not be considered private or secure. Complete privacy of computer files cannot be guaranteed, and Wharton Computing staff may view users’ files under certain circumstances, such as the appearance of abuse or questionable behavior. Complete information on account security is presented in the Acceptable Use Policy, available from the Computing tab in SPIKE.

System Quotas and Usage Restrictions
Most Wharton computer systems have fixed limits on the amount of disk space allotted to an account. For more information, refer to Wharton’s computing documentation or contact Wharton’s computing consultants. Wharton systems forbid the mass distribution of electronic mail messages without prior approval and other activities that use system resources inefficiently or place system resources at risk.

Computer Consulting
To help students make the best use of Wharton’s computing facilities, Wharton Computing provides consulting, documentation, and computer purchase assistance. The consultants are available for walk-in service at F35 JMHH, by phone at 215.898.8600 during regular consulting hours, or online by selecting the Computing tab in SPIKE.

General Concerns
Be observant and aware. Keep an eye on your belongings whether you are in the library, the lounges, a computer room, the restrooms, or elsewhere. Lock both the front and back wheels of your bicycle.

Calculators, wallets, purses, and briefcases have been stolen from students in the Wharton Complex. If you see anything suspicious, you should report it to the Penn Police Department (511 or 215.573.3333).

Remember to report anyone not wearing a Penn Card within any Wharton building during the hours of 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Call Penn Police to investigate any suspicious behavior.
