Inspired by the explosion of information sharing web sites like Wikipedia and Youtube, Yousolve was designed to facilitate the same level of growth and discussion between Finance students.
The project serves as a platform for students to work on solutions to practice problems
submitted by the professor. The professor assigns a team of students to work on a specific problem and then post an excel spreadsheet as well as a written explanation for the solution. Once the solution is posted, other students in the class have the opportunity to correct, clarify, qualify, or question it by submitting comments. When their team’s solution receives a comment, the students are notified via email so that they can respond to the questions or sanction the change to the proposed solution.
In addition to posting comments about solutions, students can also label a solution that is particularly useful and comprehensive as the best solution. The rating system encourages students to dedicate time and effort to solving the problem.
The main premise behind the creation of YouSolve is to foster a sense of community and involvement in the material and to give students some ownership in the learning process. Because these problems and solutions are available for discussion online, more class time can be used for problems with a richer or more complex context.
