Students work in groups to collectively represent the Chief Financial Officer of a company with the task of producing the 2003 annual report.

babble interface screenshot Upon logging into BABbLe, students are provided with an extensive amount of background information regarding the task at hand and directions on how to complete the task using BABbLe as an interactive tool.

Students can view the five events/transactions, which need to be incorporated into the trial balance. They can view event details either by expanding an event on the left hand side of the screen or via the PDF file included in the background information. Once students expand an event, their group can add up to eight line entries that they can adjust using their own discretion.

For each event/transaction, students have the option to enter a journal entry using a pull-down menu of accounts. Once a group is done making entries, BABbLe will:

  • Prepare an Income Statement that reflects the choices;
  • Automatically close the temporary accounts; and,
  • Prepare a Balance Sheet.

The application will also prepare a Statement of Cash Flows. Students must manually adjust some numbers on this statement after its preparation. Essentially, the application takes care of the mechanics of reflecting chosen debits and credits in financial statements.

BABbLe also allows groups to create a complete annual report (as defined above) that includes the financial statements, as well as footnotes, and other textual components of the annual report. The application does not write the footnotes or textual components (such as the MDA), but it allows students to upload .pdf files for these additional notes. BABbLe provides links to sample footnotes and useful websites that offer guidance for composing these items.
