The program is designed to admit and train a small cohort of exceptionally able PhD students who show promise for an academic career in fundamental and applied research and teaching. Applicants are expected to have completed introductory courses in economics and mathematics (including calculus and linear algebra). All applicants must take the GRE General Test or the GMAT. Successful applicants typically possess a strong mathematical background and an aptitude for analytical thinking. Although there are no absolute thresholds for admission, students who are admitted generally score on the quantitative GRE or GMAT in the 98th percentile or higher, have a high GPA from a prestigious undergraduate institution (e.g. 3.5 or higher out of 4.0), three outstanding recommendations from respected academics and well written personal statements.
Admission to Candidacy
- Complete three departmental core courses and advanced courses in area with
grade of B+ or better.
- Pass Qualifying Exam.
- Receive advisor approval on summer project.
Financial Aid
Admitted students are granted a four-year fellowship, including tuition and a stipend. After their first year, students participate in the intellectual life of the department by working as a research or teaching fellow. Summer research funding is also available from a number of sources, including the department's OPIM Scholar award and faculty research grants.
