| The Newsletter of the Wharton Alumni Community | October 2009 |
| |
Dear Alumnus/a,
With an unparalleled alumni network of more than 85,000 graduates in 140
countries, Wharton has the potential to play an important
role in the creation of a more peaceful and prosperous world. This
potential is reflected in the School’s broad global engagement and
three international Executive Boards. It is thus my great honor to
accept Dean Robertson’s
invitation to serve as chair of Wharton’s Executive Board for Asia.
Now is the ideal time for the Wharton School and the countries of Asia
to build upon an already strong relationship. Asia’s top students
are applying to the School in increasing numbers, and the region is home
to the world’s fastest-growing concentration of Wharton alumni. My
new role as chair provides a wonderful opportunity to more formally garner
the resources of the Board in support of Wharton’s strategic goals
and initiatives.
In the months ahead, the Asian Executive Board will identify and recruit
new potential members, qualified women in particular, and construct a mission
statement positioning the expertise and connections of our members for maximum
benefit to the Wharton community. We will take a more proactive role
in working with the School to identify job opportunities—both summer
internships and full-time employment—in which Wharton students and
alumni can leverage their unique skills to create real economic and social
value, and we will work with Wharton’s Aresty Institute to expand
the reach of the School’s Executive Education programs to key business
and civic leaders in the region. Finally, we will undertake a widespread
campaign to ensure that stakeholders throughout Asia are well-informed about
the Wharton School and the unparalleled talent within the Wharton community.
To that end, we look forward to working with many of you as business or
travel takes you throughout the region. Until then, please know that
the my fellow Board members and I are committed to helping the School continue
in its tradition of excellence, and to serving the Wharton alumni community—throughout
Asia and around the globe.
Sincerely,
Chanthol Sun, AMP'97, PAR'09, PAR'12

Career Services Update
MBA
MBA Career Management and Wharton alumni from around the world
partnered to create several job generation initiatives to support
students and alumni during this challenging job market. The 2008-2009
job generation initiatives included:
- Alumni Who Care program (over 25 unpaid internships generated)
- $200K Wharton School-sponsored internship program (over 110 students applied)
- Short Term Project Initiative (over 70 projects generated)
- Wharton New York City career fair (55 student and alumni attendees and 13 companies)
- Increased
interactive alumni sessions (6 virtual alumni panels and 9
Alumni-in-Residence sessions, with 845 student attendees across all
programs)
On behalf of the Wharton School, MBA Career Management would like to
thank the more than 250 alumni who participated in these initiatives
and recruited Wharton MBA talent. For information on the firms who
participated in these programs, please visit our Employer Appreciation Website.
In addition to these initiatives, Dean Tom Robertson approved the
hiring of three additional full-time MBA Career Management staff:
- Senior Associate Director, Global
Careers: Provide a strategic review of the resources offered to
students considering global careers
- Associate Director, Employer Services: Expand our employer hiring programs
- Senior Associate Director, Alumni Services: Enhance our MBA alumni resources
As a direct result of these new roles, MBA Career Management has
increased programming and representation at Wharton's Global Alumni
Forums, launched a new Global Briefings series, developed several new
career programs addressing the recession, initiated five new job
generation programs, implemented an online alumni advising scheduling
system, developed three new alumni career webinars, added new online
alumni resources such as the WetFeet Industry Guides, and enhanced our
external career coach program.
Supporting Wharton students and alumni during this critical time is one
of the School's highest priorities. If you find yourself in a job
search please visit the MBA Alumni Career Services website
to review resources available for MBA alumni. If you or your company
have an MBA hiring need, remember to recruit at Wharton. Information on
connecting with Wharton student or alumni talent is available on the MBA Career Management Employer Website.
Undergraduate
While the 2008-2009 academic year proved to be a challenging one for
graduating seniors, Wharton undergraduates fared relatively well in
their job searches, with over 90% of the class finalizing their
post-graduate plans by August 2009. Career Services provided
an array of services to support students during this time, including
coordinating a variety of on- and off-campus career fairs (in various
locations and industries), managing an extensive on-campus recruiting
program, and conducting outreach to employers to generate additional
job and internship leads for our students. We also offered a range of
new workshops to help students diversify their job search methods
including a "Finding and Applying for Jobs in a Tough Economy" workshop
and several programs focused on using social networking to further
career goals.
Career
Services continues to offer programs to encourage students to think
broadly about their career options. One such program is the Externship
Program, in which students have the opportunity to shadow an alumnus/a
(or an employer) to experience a "day in the life" in a field of
interest to them. Externships run in early January and late May so
students can participate when they are home for breaks. We are always
looking for more alumni to serve as hosts, and would like to thank
those alumni who hosted students last year. We also sponsor a Career
Discovery Seminar each semester to help students consider career
options that align with their skills, interests, and values.
For the
current academic year, Career Services received a grant from the
Partnership for Public Service to promote opportunities within the
federal government. The grant allows us to bring speakers, including
Wharton alumni working in government roles, to campus and offer
workshops about the many career paths available within the federal
government.
As in
the past, the Career Services office continues to serve undergraduate
alumni who are in the midst of a career transition. A complete list of
services for Wharton undergraduate alumni can be found on our website: www.vpul.upenn.edu/careerservices/wharton/alumni.html.
The website also outlines ways in which you can post jobs or
internships with your organization, become involved as an Externship
host, or join PACNet, the Penn Alumni Career Network. |

Five Questions: What's New with Net Neutrality and India's Mobile Markets?
Federal Communications Commission chairman Julius Genachowski in late
September outlined principles of net neutrality to promote more open
use of the Internet. What will these developments mean for business in
the U.S. and other parts of the world? In a new interview format called
Five Questions, Rajesh Jain, CEO of India-based Netcore, asks Wharton
legal studies and business ethics professor Kevin Werbach about net
neutrality. In the second part of the interview, roles are reversed and
Werbach poses five questions to Jain about opportunities in the Indian
mobile market, which is going through explosive growth. Read more. |
